1. Introduction to the Institute

The Institute of Marine Biology and Pharmacology was established in 2014 with a physical space of nearly 600m2. The main research content is the development and utilization of Marine biological resources and Marine environmental protection. It integrates biologypharmacychemistrymicrobiologyecology, toxicology and other disciplines. As a whole, it focuses on the development of Marine pharmaceutical microbial resources, mining of Marine microbial functional genes, and monitoring and remediation of Marine environment.

The teaching staff includes 5 people with senior titles, 8 people with associate senior titles, 1 people with intermediate titles and 2 postdoctoral fellows.

The Institute undertakes the teaching and training of Marine biology, the undergraduate major of Marine science, and recruits the doctoral degree of Marine technology and engineering science, biology and medicine, resources and environment professional master degree.

There are more than 100 postgraduates in the university, aiming to cultivate senior compound talents with basic theories, knowledge, research and practical application ability of Marine biology and medicine, so as to meet the urgent demand of high-quality talents in the field of Marine biology and medicine for the national Marine strategy and the development of Marine emerging industry.

2. Development objectives of the Institute

The Institute currently undertakes research and development of the national key project ,for example, the Key Deep-sea technology and equipmentMarine environmental security key special projectsnational science and technology support project national natural science fund projects and youth programs China APEC Fund projects key research projects in Zhejiang province Zhejiang province natural science foundation project, and a number of major enterprises horizontal topic.

Up to now, we have published more than 100 papers in high-level SCI journals, such as Nature Communications, Nature Chemical Biology, PNAS, BMC Genomics, Journal of Medicinal Chemistry, Tetrahedron, Environmental Science & Technology, Harmful Algae, Bioresource Technology and Nucleic Acids Research. We have obtained more than 100 national invention patents.

3. Key research direction

(1)Marine medicine: Discovery of active ingredients in Marine organisms; Synthesis and action mechanism of Marine biological active ingredients; Synthetic biology research on active components of Marine organisms with development prospects; Industrialization research and development of Marine biological active ingredients.

(2)Marine ecology and toxicologyStudy the different groups of Marine organisms, including the characteristics diversity and application potential of Marine plankton, benthos and swimming organismsIntegrate the interaction of human activities and marine organisms, and study the effects of marine organisms to Marine ecosystems, especially estuaries, offshore, deep seas and other regions with different characteristics and their response processes and mechanisms to change, provide a scientific basis for the safety of marine organisms, the sustainable development and utilization of marine biological resources, and the health and maintenance of coastal ecosystems.

(3)Marine microbial resources: Collection and identification of marine microbial resourcesFunctional genomics researchDevelop the application of microorganisms in renewable energy, extraction of active compounds, enzyme and pollutant degradation.

4. Teacher faculty

The institute now has 8 doctoral supervisors and 12 master supervisors. In addition, there are 3 doctoral supervisors from the Second Institute of Oceanology, Ministry of Natural Resources.
