Ocean Engineering & Technology
1.Development Goals
Institute of Ocean Technology (IOT) is mainly engaged in the research on ocean engineering and technology, including both theoretical study and system engineering, aiming to expand new territories of intelligent ocean technology and develop talents in this field. It is expected that the faculty staff in IOT will reach 25-30 people over the next 5-10 years, including 1-2 leading talents with international impacts and 8-10 young professors, forming 2-3 influential research groups. IOT is expected to be one of the most influential and reputed research institutions in the field of ocean technology in the coming years, undertaking major scientific research projects, obtaining national awards on scientific research or teaching, andcontinuously hosting the China Ocean Technology Conference.
2.Major Research Areas
2.1Ocean Observing Technology
Ocean sensors and observing platforms are the two maincomponents in this research area.Research directions include ocean observationprinciple and methods, in-situ seabed observation, deep-sea detection(acoustics, optics, electronics and magnetics), electro-chemical sensors, underwater hyper-spectralimaging, marine adaptive optics, marine products imaging, sea-ice optics, polar biological optics, new concept unmanned underwatervehicles such as autonomous underwater helicopter(AUH), seafloor observatory networks and mobile underwater networking technologies.
2.2 Ocean System Technology
This research area covers the fundamental theory of ocean systems (especially deep-sea) and relevant marine operation technology, utilization of ocean renewable energysuch as wave, tidal and offshore wind energy, ocean artificial upwelling/downwelling and their impact on marine environment, ocean resource detection and exploration,marine hydrodynamics, hydraulic machinery technologies.
2.3 Intelligent Ocean Technology
Intelligent ocean technology means new principles, new concepts, new methods during incorporating artificial intelligence into ocean technology, where new technologies, new platforms and new systems are to be developed. This research area mainly include intelligent development of autonomous underwater helicopter(AUH), intelligent marine equipment, underwater detection using swarms ofunmanned underwater vehicles, and marine equipment intelligent integration with ocean environment.
