The Delegation from the University of Southampton Visited the Ocean College

On November 26th, Qu Fengzhong, the Executive Vice Dean and Deputy Party Secretary of the Ocean College of ZJU, met with Professor Andrew and Professor Jörg from the University of Southampton in the UK. They held discussions and exchanges on topics such as further deepening international student exchanges, talent cultivation in the marine field, and academic and scientific research cooperation.

 

On behalf of the Ocean College, Qu Fengzhong welcomed the visit of Professor Andrew and Professor Jörg and looked forward to the two colleges further deepening their partnership and strengthening cooperation in aspects like student exchanges and academic and scientific research. Professor Andrew shared the latest developments in the field of marine science at the University of Southampton and expressed that he would actively support both-sides cooperation in aspects such as short-term study visiting programs and marine scientific research and innovation. Scholars from ZJU including Wu Jiaping, Hu Peng, Zhang Zhaohui, Tong Mengmeng, and Di Ya'nan discussed cooperation such as jointly promoting academic and scientific research cooperation, the 2+2 undergraduate double-degree cooperation in marine science, all-English courses, the global summer school program, and the joint scientific research center, and reached a preliminary consensus.

 

During the meeting, Professor Andrew and Professor Jörg also gave academic seminar reports on the concept of Anthropocene and “how humans influence the Earth through terrestrial sediments, as well as on exploring the impact on coral reef bleaching under nutrient environments”. During their visiting, Professor Andrew andProfessor Jörg visited the Marine Science Laboratory and had in-depth communication and exchanges with Professor Zhang Chaohui on aspects such as marine chemistry and organic geochemistry. They also surveyed projects such as the Marine Science and Technology Demonstration Island of ZJU and gained an in-depth understanding of ZJU's scientific and technological innovations in the marine field. They also visited the Zhoushan Campus, toured the college history museum, the library, etc., and listened to the introduction of the development process of the Ocean College of ZJU and the construction situation of the Zhoushan Campus.

 

Since the two colleges signed the joint training project for undergraduate double degrees in marine science in 2022, one undergraduate majoring in marine science from the Ocean College has been selected for this project, and ten undergraduates from the Ocean College have participated in the short-term study visit program at the University of Southampton. Amber Lou, the delegate of the International Cooperation Office of that university, has visited the Ocean College for exchanges. In January 2025, the Ocean College will organize student delegation to go to the University of Southampton to carry out exchange and learning activities.
