ZJU Ocean College Hosts Major Consultation Event for 2025 Freshmen




From November 6 to 13, ZJU Ocean College organized a series of major consultation sessions and discipline promotion activities for first-year students enrolled in the Ocean Engineering Experimental Class (Ocean Category) at Lantian Academy on the Zijingang Campus. The event aimed to help students gain a systematic understanding of different majors and make informed decisions about their academic pathways.
During the event, faculty members from various institutes introduced their disciplines, shared research insights, and answered students’ questions about academic development and career planning.
Professor Peng HU, Director of the Teaching Affairs Office and Deputy Director of the Institute of Port, Coastal & Offshore Engineering, presented an overview of the fundamentals and training framework of ocean engineering. MS Feng YE, Director of Student Affairs, introduced the college’s student development and mentoring philosophy. Professor Ying YE from the Institute of Marine Geology & Resources shared practical advice on major selection and career planning based on her research experience.
Professor Jing XU and Professor Dongfang MA from the Institute of Ocean Sensing & Networking highlighted emerging opportunities in marine data mining, communication engineering, and marine artificial intelligence. Associate Professor Pinmei WANG from the Institute of Marine Biology & Pharmacy and Associate Professor Dan SONG from the Institute of Physical Oceanography & Remote Sensing introduced the latest developments and real-world applications in the two directions of marine science.
In addition, Professor Huaping WANG and Researcher Xiaokang QI from the Institute of Marine Electronics & Intelligent System, Associate Professor Gang LI from the Institute of Marine Geology & Resources, Associate Professor Kui WANG from the Institute of Marine Chemistry & Environment, Associate Professor Li LI from the Institute of Port, Coastal & Offshore Engineering, and Associate Researchers Qiang XU and Yajing GU from the ZJU Ocean Academy, along with other faculty members, provided students with in-depth yet accessible introductions to their respective disciplines and offered targeted learning suggestions, drawing upon their research areas. Faculty members from the college's ideological and political education, academic affairs, and other management and service departments also responded fully to students' concerns regarding academics, employment, and life on the Zhoushan campus.
The event featured a peer-sharing session in which senior students shared their experiences regarding major selection procedures, postgraduate study pathways, and career development. They also provided guidance on curriculum structure and competency development.
The consultation activities significantly enhanced freshmen’s understanding of the disciplines and their future prospects, helping them clarify their academic goals and lay a solid foundation for future study and personal development.
